NADĚJE was born quite spontaneously in 1990. Major groups of Romanian refugees emerged in Czechoslovakia soon after the fall of communism.  In hot summer days,  tens of people stayed at Prague railway stations. Our founders, Vlastimila Hradecká and Ilja Hradecký, brought the first pot of soup and several garments of clothes to them. They went on with their help through finding accommodation and catering; firstly in Prague, afterwards in quickly established refugee camps in Jabloneček and Bělá pod Bezdězem (in Mladá Boleslav Region), and finally back in Prague again, where they started to set up their own centers and facilities. During that period, namely since August 1990 till April 1991, their help was based on volunteering with no financial backing for running costs.

From the first assistance to refugees, the programmes were gradually extended to other groups of people in need.  What sprang up as individual enthusiasm and zeal to help, with no financial backing from abroad grew into a non-profit organization with facilities all over the Czech Republic, that focus on five main areas: programmes for Senior Citizens, People Without Home, People With Disabilities, Vulnerable Families and Children And The Youths.
